Understanding Hearing Aids: What They Are and How They Work

Hearing aids are small electronic devices that can be worn in or behind the ear, or inside the ear canal. They are designed to amplify sound and improve hearing.

They can also be customized to suit individual hearing needs. Hearing aids work by capturing sounds with a microphone, digitizing them, and then amplifying and processing the sound before delivering it to the inner ear.

Modern hearing aids use digital technology to provide superior sound quality and a range of advanced features. For example, many hearing aids now come with directional microphones that can detect sounds coming from specific directions, making it easier to understand speech in noisy environments. Other advanced features include background noise reduction, speech enhancement, and automatic adjustments.

Additionally, many hearing aids today come with Bluetooth connectivity, enabling the wearer to stream audio from their smartphone, TV, or other compatible devices. This feature can drastically improve the listening experience, making it easier to hear phone conversations and enjoy music or other audio content.

Types of Hearing Aids

At the Ear, Nose & Throat Institute of Connecticut, we offer a range of hearing aid types to suit different needs and preferences.

Types of hearing aids include the following styles: BTE (behind-the-ear), RITE (receiver-in-the- ear), ITE (in-the-ear), CIC (in-the-canal), and CROS/BICROS. Selecting a type that’s right for you depends on a number of factors, including severity and type of hearing loss, manual dexterity, shape and size of your ear, and personal preferences.

Behind-the-Ear (BTE)

Receiver-In-the-Ear (RITE)

In-the-Canal (ITC) / In-the-Ear (ITE)

Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC)

Behind-the-Ear (BTE)

BTE (behind-the ear) hearing aids are appropriate for a wide range of hearing aids. This hearing aid fits behind the ear and attaches via standard or thin tubing to a custom earmold.

Receiver-In-the-Ear (RITE)

RITE (receiver-in-the ear) hearing aids are similar to BTE devices but are generally smaller. They sit behind the ear. A thin wire attaches to the hearing aid and sits in your ear. Generally, there is a dome attached to the part that goes into the ear canal, but in some cases, there may be a custom earmold.

In-the-Canal (ITC) / In-the-Ear (ITE)

ITE (in-the-ear) or ITC (in-the-canal) devices fill either a portion of your ear or your entire ear. They may be best suited for patients who have dexterity problems.

Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC)

CIC (completely in-the-canal) hearing aids are smaller than ITC devices, and fit more deeply into your ear canal. They are less visible, but due to their size, may not be rechargeable, and rely on a very small size battery.

BICROS/CROS hearing aids are a subset of the above, and are available in most styles. This tymp is specifically designed for normal or mild to moderate hearing loss in one ear, with the other ear having no usable hearing.
